The apsaras or celestial nymphs, are sensuous, graceful females, clothed in sumptuous costumes and wearing elaborate jewels. They adorn the temple walls, most famously at Angkor Wat, and are amongst the most beautiful examples of relief carving. The figures who dance or fly are apsaras, while standing figures are referred to as devatas.

This stunning example is carved in exquisite detail, in hardwood, and measures 110cm high x 60cm wide x 4.5cm deep. Sold, but available to order.

A spectacular sandstone statue of Brahma sitting wearing a Crown of Pearls, 120cm tall.

Brahma was never as widely worshipped in Cambodia as Shiva and Vishnu. He is however known as the Creator and is often identified by his four faces, each one looking in a cardinal direction. In his four hands he holds a rosary, a vase, a ladle and a book. Legend has it that Brahma was born from a golden lotus that emerged from the navel of Vishnu, who was relining during a cosmic sleep upon the serpent Ananta, on the waves of the ocean. His mount is Hamsa, a sacred goose, and his consort is Sarasvati. Here he is shown in a more human form wearing the Crown of Pearls, and holding a Lotus flower.
