
To increase the magical and religious power of the city Jayavarman had 54 figures of gods and 54 of demons line the avenues built on the dykes that crossed the perimeter moat of Angkor Thom at its four spectacular gates. The alluded to the legend of ‘the Churning of the Ocean of Milk’ (see our relief section for the story), and also reproduced the Tavatimsha (paradise of Indra).
