Buddha Buddharaja 48cm

When the worship of the devaraja (god-king) and Shiva was superceded by Buddhism, images of the Buddha were given regal symbols such as the diadem, mitre and crown. This is a beautiful carving of a 13 th century specimen from Wat Na Phra Men, and now in Bangkok Museum.

7/8 th century. Pre-Angkor period and still showing influence of the Indian aesthetic. The half-closed petal-shaped eyes express the state of meditation, while the elongated earlobes recall the heavy earrings worn by Prince Siddhartha before he became Buddha.
